1.4L Turbo MultiAir Engine
The 1.4L Turbo-MultiAir engine is the smaller displacement variant from FIAT Chrysler Automobiles (FCAs) family of four-cylinder gas engines. It is designed to take full advantage of the exclusive MultiAir valve train system and includes a host of engine components designed for reduced friction. This reduction in friction leads to enhanced performance and fuel efficiency.The 1.4L engine is mated to the C635 six-speed manual transmission. It delivers 160 horsepower/184 lb-ft of torque.
2.4L Tigershark MultiAir2® Engine
The 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir2 is the largest from FCAs family of four-cylinder engines. It is designed to take full advantage of the exclusive MultiAir2 valve train system and includes engine components designed to reduce friction, providing enhanced performance and fuel efficiency.MultiAir2 technology on the 2.4L engine further enhances combustion control, improves fuel efficiency and reduces exhaust emissions. The engine is mated with the 948TE nine-speed automatic transmission and delivers 180 hp at 6,300 rpm with 175 lb-ft of torque at 3,900 rpm.
Also noteworthy of the 2.4L engine is its quiet operation and two-stage oil pressure relief system that reduces engine oil pumping loads at low engine speeds. This refined oil life system calculates oil life based on a number of variables, including engine speed, operating temperature and engine load, and recommends an oil change when it’s needed. It also helps the vehicle achieve outstanding fuel efficiency.
What is MultiAir?
MultiAir is descriptive of the direct control of the intake air supply. Air intake is managed by significantly reducing dependence on a throttle valve and varying the amount of time the intake valves are open and the amount of air/fuel charge that is let into the cylinder. This happens at particularly at low speeds or in partial load driving conditions.The idea is similar to variable valve timing systems, except that MultiAir can adapt to any situation and individually tune each cylinder if necessary. The MultiAir system not only allows the engine control unit (ECU) to control intake valve lift and duration, it also enables late intake valve opening when the vehicle is sitting at idle, early intake valve closing for a more complete burn and a multi lift function that brings fresh air into the combustion chamber at multiple points in the engine’s cycle. Together minimal waste and maximum fuel efficiency result.
Normally, engine valve opening (and thus the amount of air let into the cylinder) is controlled with direct action from the camshaft. With MultiAir, the actual opening of the intake valves is controlled by using hydraulic fluid running through narrow passages that are controlled by a dual action electronic solenoid. When the solenoid is fully closed (under highway speeds or full acceleration), MultiAir allows the intake valve system to operate much like a traditional engine. When the solenoid is open, however, the oil bypasses the passage, decoupling the valves. Intake valves are no longer controlled by the direct action of the camshaft, but held closed by the tension of the valve springs.
The MultiAir system eliminates the need for a throttle body and allows infinite control over the valves that bring fresh air into the combustion chamber. No mechanical linkage is required between the accelerator and the engine. The MultiAir design places the lobes for both intake and exhaust valves on the same camshaft.
The exhaust valves operate as they would in a conventional four-stroke internal combustion engine; however, the intake valves operate differently. The intake lobe on the camshaft actuates a roller finger intake valve actuator arm, thereby pressurizing the oil passage attached to the MultiAir system, which is then electronically controlled to open and close the intake valves.
In short, MultiAir technology (when compared to non MultiAir equipped engines) delivers, on average:
- 10% boost in engine power
- 15% torque increase
- 10% improvement in fuel economy
- Up to a 40% reduction in HC and CO2 emissions
- Up to 60% NOX reduction
- Better responsiveness across the entire speed range
6-Speed Manual Transmission
The C635 manual transmission is a six-speed state-of-the-art manual three-shaft transmission, which is more compact than transmissions with two shafts. This transmission is able to withstand and transmit high maximum torque values while the additional gears result in lower engine rpms, improved fuel economy and reduced noise in the passenger compartment, especially at highway speeds.The six-speed is synchronized in all gears for smooth shift transitions.
9-Speed Automatic Transmission
The advanced 948TE nine-speed automatic is mated to the 2.4L Tigershark engine on the FIAT 500X CUV. It is the first application of its kind in the Compact CUV segment. Features of the transmission include a wide 9.81 ratio spread for enhanced performance and fuel economy; a compact design and high efficiency in all gears.The 948TE’s wide ratio spread delivers outstanding launch characteristics, smooth, transfers between gears and excellent fuel efficiency. The launch ratios – starting with a first gear of 4.70 – ensure quick take-off qualities that have been tuned to the 500X’s structure, size and weight.
A host of shorter, mid-range gears ensures short transitions between gears for smooth, almost unnoticeable conversions. The shorter steps between gears -- translate to extremely manageable “bump and shudder-free” transitions and enhanced noise/vibration characteristics.
Higher gears – e.g. in the seventh, eighth, and ninth transitions – relate to lower relative engine speeds, and in turn, excellent fuel efficiency.
The AWD system provides technologically advanced all-wheel drive performance through a fully variable wet clutch housed in the rear drive module. This clutch supplies the proper amount of torque for any driving condition including slippery conditions, aggressive starts and dynamic driving. Sophisticated algorithms allow the system to contribute to the driving dynamics while interacting with the Electronic Stability Control (ESC)2 system when approaching the traction limits of the road surface.By utilizing automatic disconnect to the auxiliary drive (driveline and rear-axle, disconnect), the system can completely remove power to the non-driven axle when FWD performance is adequate (i.e. on dry surfaces). Power is removed in such a manner, that the hypoid gears and prop-shaft do not rotate (all ‘spinning’ stops). The operator does not select FWD or AWD, as the intelligent controls will ensure that the proper mode is engaged when necessary. The result is two-fold: excellent fuel efficiency as well as driver convenience.
